PR Nightmare: Koran burning fires up Afghan clashes

At least four people are dead and dozens more wounded after police in Afghanistan open fire during a second day of protests. Outside a US military base, demonstrators are hurling rocks at police and chanting anti-American slogans after copies of the Koran, the Muslim Holy Book were inadvertently burned by troops. The US embassy in Kabul has been put on lockdown during the protests. A senior commander apologized yesterday and ordered a full investigation. Petrol Panic: UK tanks hit by Iran oil ban backfire
The UN nuclear watchdog says its two-day mission in Iran has failed to produce a definitive result in clarifying the purpose of Tehran's controversial nuclear programme. The IAEA adds that this is due to its team not being allowed to visit a key military site. Tehran - which insists its activities are purely peaceful - in turn says the agency's second visit in less than a month was for talks and not inspections. The Islamic state has also reiterated its readiness to return to the negotiating table. Arming Al-Qaeda: US to pump weapons into Syria warzone?
The US has hinted it could eventually give arms to rebels in Syria - despite previous strident opposition to further militarizing the conflict in the country. The Obama administration says if a political solution to the crisis proved impossible it might consider other options. 'US not funding Putin's presidential campaign'
The recent appointment of Michael McFaul as US ambassador to Russia was seen by many as Washington showing favor toward the opposition. In a frank conversation with RT McFaul asserted that the US does not finance either the opposition or Putin. Speaking about US anti-missile bases in Europe - a major stumbling block in Russia-US relations - McFaul explained that Russia's "obsession" with a legally binding guarantee is not "rational," but stressed that he sees a way forward through negotiations.
